I’m so happy that school outreach has become a big part of who I am! I have been telling my stories in school settings and teaching songwriting lessons with students for over a decade, but learning about Brene Brown’s research on shame and vulnerability (check it out if you haven’t already!) changed the trajectory of my work in 2016. I started a program called the Shameless Workshop – a one hour songwriting class (with musicians and non-musicians alike!) that uses music and communication to help give students tools to fight their own shame.
Every experience that I have had working with classrooms in every region that I have been to – from Chicago to Dallas to Italy to Ohio – has been incredibly powerful! So far, Shameless has reached 10,000 students and over 35 communities. We are proud to be partnered with the non-profit, Unsilence (unsilence.org). I also started a second, larger initiative in 2018 called “Nobody But You” in partnership with Muse Machine in Ohio. It is an upbeat 45 minute mini musical about my life that helps empower students to be resilient, gritty, and vulnerable themselves. I was lucky enough to work with 40 schools and over 20,000 students last fall!
We are still booking for this school year, so if you are interested in bringing the workshop to your school, send me an email in the contact box! You can also find out more information about our partnership with Unsilence at http://www.unsilence.org!
